The End of an Era: What the Flamel Series Means to me

On the eve of the release of The Enchantress, the final book in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series, I'd like to share some thoughts on what this series has meant to me.

Life long friends
At the request of friends that I met through our love of Harry Potter, I read The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. At the time I did not know how much one book series would mean to me. Through  my involvement on the fansite, I have worked with and met so many amazing people that I never would have come into contact with if it wasn't for the series. I've traveled across the country and the ocean to meet some of the wonderful people that share my love for the Flamel story. And I've developed life long friendships that I don't know where or who I'd be today without them.

New experiences
Aside from the travel, I've had so many new eye opening experiences that never would have happened if it weren't for this series. I learned so much about myself and that I can really do anything I put my mind to, even if I know nothing about it from the start. I learned to podcast, I learned to edit, I learned to write and I learned to be adventurous.

A fabulous author
If you've ever had the esteemed pleasure of meeting Michael Scott you are truly a lucky person. He is one of the most fun and down to earth people I have ever met, and the fact that he writes amazing books is a huge bonus. He loves his fans and goes above and beyond to interact and answer questions, even if its just a deviously cryptic response that leaves you with more questions than answers. His books leave me with a something not many authors have done, a want and love of reading.

A love of research
This series has introduced me to new places, new mythology and new characters from history. Its sent me to Google, numerous websites and even the library for countless hours in an effort to learn more about the elements from the books. I've tried and tried to get one step ahead of Michael Scott and figure out what could be coming next, but as those that have read the series know, that's impossible because he's always twenty steps ahead of his readers. For the true love of research for the series starts with him, and I've never in my life seen so many people, young and old, find a similar lust for research and fact finding that this series has brought about.

A love of writing
The first author I ever heard say "If you want to be a writer you have to be a reader first and foremost" was Michael Scott. He said out of the love of reading you will want to tell your own stories or in some cases think you can do better than the words on the page in front of you. At the time of hearing this I did not know how deeply this statement would affect me. In fact I never had aspirations to be a writer. But because of the Flamel series, I started reading, more than I'd ever read in my life. The more I read, the more ideas started to swirl in my head. And one day those ideas completely took over until before I knew it I was writing. Words became sentences, sentences became paragraphs , paragraphs became chapters and then finally a full on manuscript, and then the realization that I didn't want to stop at just one. I had to write more and more. And then a huge transition in my life, I started calling myself a writer.

So after years of following the Flamel story, a huge, enormous thank you Michael Scott for this amazing series and for bringing so many great people together. The words you've created have meant so much to so many people. Congrats on the release of the final book that has been years in the making. I'm looking forward to the next great adventure.

  1. You know I got into these books also via suggestions from my love of Harry Potter. I'm enjoying every single book and am currently rereading.

It seems that most of the books I'm finding that aren't in my normal genre (Christain Fiction & romance) have been recommended to me via Harry Potter.

I'll be sad to see the series end. Michael is one author that actually helps make his fans feel like a tight knit family.

  2. Hi Jamie,

Well said! I too am a writer because of Michael Scott. I met him at a convention in Dublin in 1991, and told him "I've always wanted to write a book." He snapped back with "Well, why DON'T you?" I didn't have a good answer for that! And the truth is, there IS no good answer!

Michael taught me that if people who want to write, will write. But most people who SAY they want to write really only want to *have written*: they want the result without putting in the work!

Michael is not only one of the most accomplished and talented story-tellers I've ever encountered, he's also been a wonderful friend. He frequently - jokingly - quotes Gore Vidal: "Whenever a friend succeeds, a little something in me dies." Well, that little part of me wants to be jealous of Michael's success with the Flamel series, but I can't - I love the books too much!

Michael deserves every success with this series. Not just because it's brilliant, but because he has always been such a positive role model for upcoming writers!

    Love 'n' cuddles,
    Michael the Lesser

  3. I couldn't agree more! Michael is a master mind, always toying with the fans but also (sometimes) giving us the answers we need to keep us semi-sane.

I don't think I've discussed a book as much as I have this series since Harry Potter (though, admittedly with myself as I don't know many people who read the series and I'm not as connected in the forums) and it has been a mind blowing experience. The history elements of the series have made me want to travel to the places mentioned and the mythology elements have made me want to delve deeper. And just the story itself keeps you asking questions—Oh so many theories!!

This is a series I have completely enjoyed investing in and I'll be sad, happy, conflicted, and maybe go a bit crazy the moment I reach the last page. I hope there comes a day when I come across another that does the same as the SOTINF series has for me. Or maybe I'll be the one writing it (fat chance, but I can hope, right?).

Thanks for this lovely post, Jamie! Your work on the podcast, along with everyone else, is appreciated by me and many, many other fans of the series and I will be hoping for more episodes even after the series is at its end.

    1. Megan,
I know how you feel! I'm definitely conflicted about the end of the series. I don't want it to end because I too have enjoyed the experience.

Thanks for the compliment on the podcast. We definitely couldn't do it without the fans, we'd just be talking to ourselves ;) And we will definitely keep going, with the podcasts for a while. We have a whole other book to discuss and then after that I'm sure Michael will have other great stories for us to dig into :)

  4. From the day I first picked up The Alchemyst and was captivated by the story, to convincing you and some of my other friends to join me in reading & talking about it, to emailing Michael getting his permission to start the forum so that other fans could join in our chats..to 4 years later, now with nearly 4,000 worldwide forum members, a monthly podcast, a website and a yearly prize quest...it's been quite an extraordinary and wonderful experience!
You and the rest of the team have been such a blessing, and it was a great pleasure for me to be able to have you come to stay in my home! What a great tribute to Michael's writing that fans become firm friends who fly half way around the world to visit each other!
And indeed,I have enjoyed some wonderful visits to Ireland to meet and talk with Michael, he is a gracious host, a knowledgeable guide and fascinating dinner company! A truly unique gentleman.
If you get the chance to catch him on tour, I'd urge you to go to hear him speak on the Flamel series, mythology and writing, his knowledge is quite amazing, his writing advice is priceless and inspiring.
The Enchantress is an incredible finale to this series that has meant so much to me, and I hope to see it storm a path straight to #1 on the best seller lists!
A love for Potter may have introduced us..but our love of Flamel made us friends xx

    1. So very true! And I'm four years late in telling you this but yes I loved The Alchemyst. Although you probably knew that by now. ;) Thanks again for shoving this amazing series in my direction :) You are one of the main reasons for bringing all the Flamel fans together and I couldn't be more thankful for it.

I applaud your Immortal portal. Though i only had time to visit twice, I thought it was cool and i learned some interesting facts I never knew about the books. :)
Since Enchantress arrived at the house, I'm dying to see what happens at the end!!!
BTW, you're a great writer and I'm eager to see your work published one day. :)
